MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos expressed his satisfaction on Thursday (03 Apr 2025), saying he was “glad to be of help” after Vice President Sara Duterte thanked him for playing an ironic role in mending her relationship with her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte.
This comes after the elder Duterte’s detention by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague due to alleged crimes against humanity linked to his controversial drug war.
In a briefing at Malacañang, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro shared Marcos’s response to the Vice President’s statement.
Duterte had explained that the fallout of their “uniteam” had inadvertently facilitated a reconciliation between her and her father, culminating in forgiveness after months of tension.
“Although ironic, I thanked him because, through all of this, my father and I have achieved forgiveness,” Vice President Duterte said in an interview earlier this week.
Castro relayed the President’s reaction, stating, “His response was ‘glad I could help.'”
However, she suggested that Vice President Duterte might want to thank her father first, pointing out that without his arrest and detention for the drug war, the family would not have had the opportunity to be together in The Hague.
“Had the drug war not occurred, and no one filed a complaint, they wouldn’t have had the chance to go to The Hague. So, it’s better she thanks him first,” Castro added.
