MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported a peaceful opening day for the local campaign period ahead of the May 12 midterm elections. As candidates for seats in the House of Representatives and local government positions kicked off their campaign activities on Friday, March 28, the PNP confirmed there were no major incidents.
In a statement on Saturday, the PNP emphasized its continued coordination with the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other law enforcement agencies. Heightened security measures, including nationwide checkpoints and the enforcement of the gun ban, remain in place to curb election-related violence.
“The PNP is fully committed to ensuring a safe and orderly election process. We will not tolerate any illegal activities that could jeopardize the integrity of the polls,” said PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil.
Police urged the public to stay vigilant, report violations, and cooperate with authorities to maintain a secure environment as the election day approaches.
The peaceful atmosphere extended to Central Luzon as well, with Police Regional Office-3 Director Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo expressing optimism for the campaign period’s continued peace.
“We remain dedicated to upholding a safe, honest, and peaceful election,” Fajardo added.
The campaign period will conclude on May 10, and the election period, including the gun ban, will last until June 11.
