CAPAS, Tarlac – The Philippines’ first cable car service could be operational in 2028, according to Department of Transportation (DOTr) Undersecretary Timothy John Batan here Thursday (11 July 2024).

Speaking at the Build Better More Infrastructure Forum in New Clark City, Batan revealed that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) recently completed a pre-feasibility study for a cable car connecting the Manila Metro Rail Transit Line 4 (MRT-4) Taytay station and Antipolo.

“The project appears viable, but further studies are needed,” Batan said. The feasibility study, set to begin by the middle of 2025, will determine the project cost, passenger capacity, and other details.

If the feasibility study concludes successfully by mid-2025, the project could be bid out by late 2025 or early 2026.

“Construction could take about two years, so if awarded in 2026, the cable car might be operational by 2028,” Batan explained.

Rizal province was chosen for the pilot project due to its mountainous terrain, which is ideal for cable cars. Baguio is also considering a similar project in collaboration with the local government, with support from the DOTr.
