MANILA — Senator Grace Poe has welcomed the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) decision to review the jeepney modernization program, calling it an opportunity to make the initiative “humane and right.”

“The review of the jeepney modernization program ordered by the DOTr Secretary is a chance to ensure it is just, humane, and appropriate,” Poe said.

“We trust that the DOTr-led review body will engage transportation and commuter groups, the private sector, local government units, the academe, and other stakeholders to provide a comprehensive outlook on the situation and propose the best solutions.”

The senator added that the review should not only focus on how the program can be rolled out smoothly but also consider the current struggles of drivers and operators who are facing financial difficulties due to the exorbitant cost of new jeepney units.

“We need a modernization program that ensures no one is left behind,” Poe emphasized.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that he had ordered the creation of a committee to conduct the review of the jeepney modernization program.
