MANILA – Authorities at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) intercepted over $273,000 in undeclared cash from a Hong Kong-bound passenger on January 22, 2025.
During routine baggage screening, X-ray operator Yvonne Dujali noticed an unusual image on the monitor, prompting a manual inspection of the passenger’s luggage. Bundles of cash, totaling over P16 million, were found inside.
The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) immediately contacted the passenger and called in the Philippine National Police – Aviation Security Group and the Bureau of Customs for further investigation and proper handling of the cash.
OTS Administrator Crizaldo Nieves highlighted the effective collaboration among airport authorities in preventing illegal activities at NAIA.
Under Philippine law, travelers must declare foreign currency exceeding $10,000 and Philippine pesos over P50,000.
