MANILA – Singapore has reiterated its commitment to upholding freedom of navigation and overflight in the region as it strengthens military ties with the Philippines.

During a reception marking the goodwill visit of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) landing ship tank RSS Endeavour in Manila, Singaporean Ambassador Constance See emphasized the importance of international law in ensuring open maritime routes.

“As a nation whose trade volume is three times its gross domestic product, Singapore places extreme importance on these principles,” See stated, underscoring the need for diplomacy to resolve regional disputes, particularly in the South China Sea.

The RSS Endeavour’s visit from Feb. 13 to 16 was the first port call by an RSN vessel in Manila in 26 years. It formed part of the Midshipman Sea Training Deployment program, allowing Singaporean naval cadets to apply their training in real-world scenarios.

During their stay, RSN midshipmen engaged in cultural exchanges and sports activities with their Philippine Navy counterparts. The visit also reinforced the defense cooperation memorandum of understanding signed between Singapore and the Philippines in July 2024, building on a 2023 agreement focused on military education, training, and disaster relief efforts.
