MANILA — In a shocking incident on January 2, 2024, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party, was assaulted during a visit to the construction site of a new airport on Gadeok Island, near the southeastern port city of Busan.
The attack, which occurred at 10:27 a.m. during a question and answer session with reporters, left Lee with an injury to the left side of his neck.
Following the assault, Lee was swiftly transported to Pusan National University Hospital, where he remained conscious despite sustained bleeding.
The assailant, posing as one of Lee’s supporters, approached him under the pretext of seeking an autograph before attacking with an unidentified weapon measuring approximately 20-30 centimeters in length. Eyewitnesses reported the swift arrest of the suspect at the scene.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of political figures and prompted an urgent investigation into the motives behind the attack. (With reports from PNA)
