Asticom Technology Inc., a leading player in the technology and outsourcing industry, is advancing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within human resources (HR) to foster a transformative, people-centric employee experience.

Speaking at the 61st Annual Conference of the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP), Asticom President and CEO Mharicar Castillo-Reyes highlighted AI’s potential to empower HR teams and enhance the employee journey.

In light of Ipsos Global Advisor’s 2024 survey showing that 73% of Filipinos fear job loss due to AI, Castillo-Reyes calls for a new perspective, viewing AI as an enabler of growth rather than a replacement for human capabilities.

“Technology is not just a tool; it’s an enabler of a new employee experience that brings out the best in people and organizations,” she said, adding that people-centered AI can boost engagement, reduce turnover, and enhance productivity.

She discussed the critical global trends in HR, highlighting AI-powered tools and advanced analytics as essential assets for organizations striving to remain competitive in a data-driven landscape. These innovations showcase AI’s ability to automate traditional HR tasks, like resume screening and interview scheduling, while leveraging data insights for strategic decision-making.

“AI can free up HR teams from mundane tasks, allowing them to focus on more strategic initiatives that enhance employee growth and development,” she said.

But while AI offers substantial potential to boost efficiency, Castillo-Reyes acknowledged the challenges it presents.

“As we incorporate AI into HR, we must consider issues such as bias, privacy, and transparency,” she cautioned, emphasizing the need for a strategic approach that aligns AI initiatives with business goals, grounded in fairness and integrity.

Integrating digital strategies with company culture and values ensures that technology genuinely supports the workforce, she said, with inclusivity and empathy guiding AI implementation to foster continuous improvement and empowerment.

Being at the helm of Asticom, Castillo-Reyes shared how the company’s HR solutions—spanning recruitment process outsourcing, employee services, learning platforms, and payroll management—use AI to enhance productivity, reduce turnover, and increase engagement.

She pointed to Asticom’s AI-driven solution, NXT (www.nxt.com.ph),  designed to optimize talent acquisition strategies, showcasing how such tools empower HR teams to enhance and elevate the workplace journey.

“A truly human-centered digital transformation places people at its heart,” Castillo-Reyes stated. “At Asticom, our mission is to improve people’s lives by creating opportunities through innovative services and technologies.”

Through this approach, Asticom aims to help companies achieve greater employee satisfaction, productivity, and retention, shaping a workforce ready for the future.

Carlo Santos, Globe Senior Director for Analytics and Stakeholder Engagement, speaks during the DTP Session at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

Reaffirming its dedication to promoting digital citizenship and online safety, Globe held a school tour as part of the annual G DAY celebration, bringing its Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) to five schools nationwide.

The training workshops were held at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, STI Caloocan, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Bintawan National High School in Nueva Vizcaya, and the University of Southern Mindanao, which brought together over 1,000 students.

The Digital Thumbprint Program is a series of capacity-building workshops organized by Globe that aim to empower students and communities by promoting responsible digital citizenship and raising awareness about online safety, digital discernment, cybersecurity, mental health and wellness, and the sustainable use of technology.

The need for such programs is urgent. The Philippines faces significant challenges with online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC). Exacerbated by high internet usage, poverty rates, and advanced digital technologies, the country ranked second globally in cyber tip reports on child sexual abuse, with nearly 2.8 million incidents recorded by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in 2022. The International Justice Mission estimates that one in 100 Filipino children has been trafficked for online exploitation.

Globe’s DTP initiative empowers students, teachers, and parents to proactively protect themselves and their communities from online risks, aligning with Globe’s mission to create a safer and more inclusive digital space. In 2023, Globe blocked over 404,730 malicious sites and links associated with child exploitation, illegal gambling, and online piracy — a 45% increase from the previous year — demonstrating its continued commitment to online safety.

In light of the increasing relevance of artificial intelligence (AI), Globe has expanded DTP to include discussions on AI ethics. The LinkedIn and Microsoft 2024 Annual Work Trend Index (WTI) study revealed that 71% of employers prefer candidates with AI skills, highlighting the need for students to understand and navigate AI responsibly.

At the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, 50 students from the College of Criminology participated in a session designed to provide them with skills to safeguard their communities from online dangers. This training supports their future roles in public safety, especially in combating cybercrime.

Students found the DTP Learning Hour helpful for raising awareness about online security. Key takeaways included avoiding scams by verifying emails, texts, and links, being cautious with public Wi-Fi, and thinking before clicking. They valued learning how to protect personal information and stay safe online.

Similarly, STI Caloocan welcomed 50 IT students, who, as part of their Foundation Day celebrations, learned about the importance of digital responsibility in their tech-driven careers.

Meanwhile, at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 365 students from the College of Information Systems and Technology Management gained valuable insights about AI, helping them navigate the digital world and lead with integrity.

“Educating students on digital safety is essential as they prepare for a future where technology is deeply intertwined with everyday life,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

“Through our Digital Thumbprint Program, we aim to empower the youth to use technology responsibly and ethically, ensuring they are equipped for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

As part of its broader efforts, Globe also participated in the University of Southern Mindanao’s Pasiklaban 2024, enhancing festivities with a special #GDayEveryday celebration. Informative sessions on Telco 101, WiFi 101, and the DTP helped students gain practical knowledge about the digital world.

In another G Day highlight, Globe visited Bintawan National High School, nestled in the mountains of Villaverde, Nueva Vizcaya, as a gesture of appreciation for the students’ commitment to education. The visit reinforced Globe’s belief that every child deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and dream big.

To further engage students, Globe added an exciting raffle during the DTP sessions, offering winners GFiber Prepaid plans. These plans provide fiber-fast connectivity without a lock-up period, immediately installed at the winners’ homes to support their academic and digital activities.

For more information on Globe’s Digital Thumbprint Program and its advocacy for digital safety, visit the DTP page on the Globe website.

Restoration after ‘Pepito’

Globe has also started restoration efforts in provinces affected by network disruptions mostly due to commercial power outages.

As of Monday, Globe has fully restored services in Sorsogon, Masbate, and Albay. Restoration efforts continue in some affected sites in other parts of Bicol and provinces across Northern and Central Luzon.

Globe calls on customers to support relief efforts by donating their Globe Rewards points via the GlobeOne app.

In support of the country’s push for digital inclusivity, Globe advocates for a collaborative, industry-wide approach to expand infrastructure in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

Carlo Puno, Globe Chief Financial Officer and Chief Risk Officer, highlighted the importance of collaboration among telcos, government agencies, and tower operators to make the most of existing resources in expanding telecom services to underserved communities.

“It should be a rollout that is maximizing the current footprint of the different players, potentially leveraging the towercos’ presence in certain areas and avoiding duplication of efforts in any of the mobile network operators,” Puno said at a recent media briefing.

“I think if we’re able to do that, we will be able to support the government and bridge that digital divide. But it has to be more [of] a conversation in the industry rather than just one player like Globe rolling out,” he added.

Currently, Globe has over 600 operational sites in GIDA areas.

The Connectivity Plan Task Force (CPTF), a body headed by Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO, under the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC), recently proposed the construction of new towers in remote parts of the country through a public-private collaboration.

This is aligned with the Marcos administration’s push to bring connectivity to remote areas. Over 7,000 Philippine barangays are classified as GIDAs, with about 25 million residents lacking access to life-enabling connectivity.

Telcos also pledged to provide SIMs with data plans to unconnected households via government subsidy starting this year until 2028.

Through this cooperative approach, Globe and the other players aim to support the government’s Digital Philippines vision and ensure that every Filipino, regardless of location, has access to the opportunities afforded by digital connectivity.

While addressing the impact of recent storms, Globe is closely monitoring the track of yet another incoming weather system likely to affect a large swathe of Luzon and parts of Visayas this weekend.

Globe’s network teams are on alert in anticipation of the effects of Severe Tropical Storm Pepito, which entered the Philippine area of responsibility Thursday night, tracking west southwest towards the country, according to the weather bureau.

The typhoon may undergo rapid intensification and become a Super Typhoon before making landfall, PAGASA said.

Globe has prepositioned personnel and supplies on the path of the typhoon, particularly in Southern and Central Luzon, and in Eastern Visayas. Globe’s network facilities have generator sets and batteries in anticipation of commercial power outages due to severe weather.

“Our teams are getting ready for Pepito, with supplies and manpower in position as we brace for impact. While it is inevitable that power outages and ground conditions could cause service disruptions particularly with typhoons of this magnitude, our goal is to ensure that we’ll be able to quickly restore much needed connectivity once conditions on the ground permit,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Globe urges communities that may experience the effects of Pepito to prepare supplies, including food, water, medicine, first aid kits, emergency light sources and batteries, and to charge their mobile devices.

The company also reminds the public to get weather information only from legitimate sources. Globe provides free data access to the website of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Many communities across the country are reeling from the impact of recent successive storms and need all the help they could get. Globe calls on its customers to support relief efforts by donating their Globe Rewards points via the GlobeOne app.

Stars call for urgent action vs content piracy

Filipinos face a heightened risk of cyberthreats when they browse pirate sites, underscoring the need to urgently pass legislation allowing site blocking in the Philippines.

The study, commissioned by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and authored by Dr. Paul Watters of Macquarie University, found that Filipinos are up to 33 times more likely to encounter cyber threats on popular pirate websites compared to legitimate film and TV platforms.

These findings were presented at an anti-piracy symposium organized by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), GMA Networks, Inc., and Globe.

Watters cited how high internet and mobile data usage in the Philippines makes Filipinos an attractive target for pirates. He said pirate sites provide a platform for criminals to harvest customer data more easily than hacking into websites to get data. Unfortunately, consumers in the Philippines use pirate sites unaware of their inherent dangers, including exposing their data.

With such consumer vulnerabilities, Watters underscored the need to put in place measures to ensure compliance and build awareness on the threats that lurk in pirate sites.

“Site-blocking of the most popular pirate sites is the most effective baseline option,” he said in a fireside chat.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer, cited the urgency for Congress to amend the Philippines’ outdated Intellectual Property Code to strengthen enforcement against content piracy, particularly authorizing site-blocking. All progress on amending bills will be lost once the current congressional ends and new leaders take office after the 2025 elections.

“At Globe, we champion a digital world that is safe and empowering for all Filipinos. This study underscores how critical it is to pass legislation that would authorize site blocking to protect consumers, especially our youth, from the hidden dangers lurking on pirate sites,” said Crisanto.

“We urge Congress to pass this vital piece of legislation before the end of their session to avoid further delays and safeguard the digital well-being of our nation,” she added.

Stars weigh in

Some of the country’s  biggest celebrities came together and rallied behind the call for stronger enforcement against content piracy.

In a fireside chat moderated by TV host Pia Guanio, her fellow Team Globe of Good Ambassadors Edu Manzano, Shaina Magdayao, and Kim Atienza talked about how piracy has effectively crippled the entertainment industry.

Manzano, actor and former head of the Optical Media Board, recalled the time when the Philippine film industry produced over 200 films per year. Because of piracy, this number is down to less than 30 per year, leaving many industry workers out of jobs.

“It was a tough time because we could not find work for over 9,000 unemployed workers in our industry. We saw the direct effect. Sad to say people show up in the office to ask for a buck or two,” said Manzano, recalling the toll of piracy when the crime first emerged.

“To this day, I have to say that the industry has not recovered,” said Manzano.

He cited the urgency of passing legislation with strong penal provisions to clamp down on piracy, keeping in mind that this crime is borderless.

“Right now, with the way it’s going, I personally feel that we need legislation. We have to pressure like-minded members of the House of Representatives and the Senate and let them realize that laws become flawed soon after they pass because technology advances at an amazing pace,” Manzano said.

Magdayao, among the most prominent actresses of her generation, meanwhile, said piracy has discouraged investments in the entertainment industry, limiting the great potential of Filipino creatives.

“At the end of the day, to be honest, as a worker myself, show business is a “business.” If walang ROI ang producers and investors because people are not willing to go to the cinemas anymore or pay legit streaming channels, producers won’t be investing in our talent and work anymore or even funds to train, educate and hone the talents of emerging filmmakers in the country,” Magdayao said.

““Lagi ko rin niyayabang sa foreign producers whenever I attend International festivals na maganda ang Pilipinas. We have beautiful locations, beautiful people and talents ….. but how will we, as talents and as an industry grow and expand if no one invests? Piracy limits Filipinos from reaching global cinema na kayang-kaya naman sana natin, given the proper opportunity, help and support,” she said.

Globe has been a consistent advocate for a safer and more responsible digital space. As a proud member of the AVIA-CAP and the Video Coalition of the Philippines, Globe actively supports legislative efforts to curb online piracy, such as the pending Senate bills aimed at strengthening site-blocking provisions within the Intellectual Property Code.

Globe believes the creative industry must be more stringently protected to ensure a sustainable future for content creators and consumers. Its long-going #PlayItRight campaign raises public awareness on the perils of content piracy and advocates for stronger protection of the country’s Php 1.6-billion industry.

PetPal, the Philippines’ first all-in-one digital petcare platform from 917Ventures, is transforming the country’s veterinary landscape with its Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Portal.

This latest innovation marks PetPal’s move in expanding its services to cater not just to pet owners, but also Filipino veterinarians.

The EMR Portal aims to help in streamlining patient management by linking pet owners’ information submitted through the PetPal app with veterinarians’ patient records–providing quick access to comprehensive profiles for faster, more accurate diagnoses and treatments.

Martin Luchangco, General Manager of PetPal highlighted that the integration of a digitized system can enhance overall clinic efficiency; guiding veterinarians through the entire process—from initial consultations and scheduling procedures to managing prescriptions.

“We see the Vet EMR Portal as a game-changer for Filipino veterinarians,” Luchangco said. He mentions how the platform’s real-time sync with the information submitted through the PetPal app is what sets it apart from other EMR service providers, making it easier for both vets and pet owners to keep track of their pets’ medical records.

He added, “Our goal is to help vets do what they do best—caring for animals. Through the EMR Portal, we are streamlining administrative tasks and enhancing the overall veterinary experience.”

In the Philippines, where 79% of households own pets, the veterinary sector faces considerable challenges. With only around 10,000 active veterinarians and fewer than 500 clinics nationwide, the ratio of pets to veterinarians is a staggering 2,000 to 1.

This shortage highlights a substantial gap in the availability and accessibility of veterinary services, which PetPal seeks to bridge by empowering veterinarians using the EMR portal.

For a limited time, vets are offered FREE access to PetPal’s EMR services. Those  interested in exploring the benefits of the EMR Portal may visit https://org-portal.petpal.asia/login  for more details.

Globe’s cable landing station in Davao will serve as a critical interconnection point for the MYUS cable system, which will connect Malaysia and the U.S. through high-capacity fiber optic connectivity, enhancing digital access in Southeast Asia.

Hexa Capital Consultancy PLT (“Hexa”), owner of the Malaysia-U.S. (“MYUS”) cable based in Malaysia, appointed Globe Telecom, Inc. as its Philippine Landing Party for the MYUS cable system.

The MYUS cable is being planned with a ready-for-service date of mid-2028 and will connect Malaysia and the U.S. directly for the first time with high-capacity fiber optic connectivity, increasing access to reliable and affordable digital services across Southeast Asia.  The cable backbone will extend between the Malaysian Peninsula near Sedili to Davao, Philippines, the U.S territory of Guam and then directly onward to Alaska Communications’ cable landing station in Florence, Oregon.  Along the path, MYUS will also connect Batam, Jakarta and Balikpapan in Indonesia.

Globe’s cable landing station in Davao will serve as a crucial interconnection point for the project.

“The MYUS cable is being designed specifically to provide trusted and reliable direct fiber connectivity between these locations for large hyperscaler, cloud, content, telecom carriers and government customers,” according to Dr. Azhari Abang Hadari, the Founder and CEO of Hexa.

“MYUS customers can be confident in the route design because it avoids the problems plagued by other existing undersea cables that transit contested waters in Southeast Asia. The MYUS Network provides efficient routing for the lowest possible latency, and uses well-known, well-proven cable landing sites that have excellent up-time performance as well as widely available backhaul options for Hexa’s fiber pair owners,” added Dr. Azhari.  “Globe Telecom was our top choice when we evaluated strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific Region, with their long history of stable high-performance fiber optic network and the new PDSCN domestic Philippines fiber system connecting major enterprises and data centers throughout the country.”

“We look forward to a long-term relationship hosting MYUS at our premier landing station in Davao. Our cable landing facilities offer diverse route connectivity to global and regional carriers. The access to customers utilizing our robust state-of-the-art network should give confidence to operators looking to interconnect with domestic and international constituents. Davao is a critical hub for subsea fiber optic cables, which are the backbone of today’s internet,” said KD Dizon, Head of Globe Business

MYUS will be an open cable with 16 fiber pairs along its backbone.  Hexa’s business model is to sell fiber pairs to long-term owners who will demand reliability, resilience and high cable performance to support their business growth.  Hexa’s selection of Globe as a partner builds on its strategy of planning globally and locally with strong, proven and capable operators that can exceed the requirements of the most demanding customers.

The Hexa team met with customers and partners at the Submarine Networks World conference in Singapore (SNW 2024, 25-26 Sep.) and looks forward to creating opportunities with many more in the coming months.
