Globe is ramping up its sustainability strategy, having transitioned 20 of its major facilities to 100% renewable energy (RE), with three more slated to follow by the end of the year.

In 2023, the 20 facilities account for approximately 65 million kilowatt-hours of energy consumption, including 7.9 million kWh from The Globe Tower (TGT) alone, all sourced from renewable energy. This enabled Globe to avoid emitting approximately 42,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in the same year.

This transition was made possible through Globe’s strategic partnership with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES), the retail electricity supply arm of ACEN, an Ayala company.

As of 2024, Globe operates a total of 29 RE-powered sites and aims to expand this to nearly 70 within the next two years, demonstrating its dedication to sustainability and RE adoption.

“At Globe, sustainability along with risk management, is a core strategy to building business resilience. In the face of climate change, RE powers both good grid and off-grid, so reducing our carbon footprint and making our network more climate-adaptive could only bear value to us. Therefore, the adoption of these technologies clearly demonstrates that business growth and resilience go hand in hand,” said Ernest Cu, President and CEO of Globe.

He cited the need for a strong partner in Globe’s RE shift. Out of 29 Globe sites shifted to clean energy so far, 20 are supported by ACEN under medium-to-long-term engagements.

“Digitalization and sustainability are at the very core of the Ayala group. We are excited to harness these synergies with Globe and help empower the Filipino people in a sustainable manner,” said Eric Francia, President and CEO of ACEN.

The collaboration with ACEN RES, which started in 2019, is a key component of Globe’s sustainability strategy. ACEN RES has established a strong reputation for delivering sustainable and reliable energy solutions across the Philippines and the region.

In recognition of its commitment to sustainability, ACEN RES awarded Globe the Powered by Renewable Energy badge for having shifted to 100% RE supply.  This was unveiled during a ceremony at The Globe Tower.

“Truly, it’s a milestone that we’ve achieved today. We are recognized by the leading renewable energy company in the Philippines as indeed making a major step towards sustainability. It is something that this management team has been very committed to, not only providing digital but providing it sustainably for the country,” said Cu.

Through its sustained focus on renewable energy and strong industry partnerships, Globe continues to solidify its role as a leader in environmental sustainability, positioning itself as a catalyst for positive change in the Philippine business landscape.

Globe has successfully upgraded 450 cities and towns across the Philippines to fiber-optic technology, strengthening its commitment to providing top-tier connectivity to its wireline customers while promoting sustainability through energy-efficient, future-ready solutions.

The migration, which entails replacing copper cables with fiber, covers towns and cities in at least 60 provinces across the country.

Globe is close to completing its shift from outdated copper cables to modern fiber optics, designed to meet the growing demand for reliable broadband connectivity across all sectors. This upgrade ensures customers enjoy uninterrupted, high-speed internet, ideal for remote work, online learning, entertainment, and a range of digital activities.

Moreover, Globe’s shift to fiber is a vital part of its commitment to sustainability. Fiber-optic technology has a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional copper-based systems due to its reduced energy consumption.

By implementing this more efficient technology, Globe can transmit data faster over longer distances while consuming less energy, ultimately contributing to the company’s overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“This transformation enables us to better serve the growing digital needs of our customers while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. As we continue to enhance connectivity across the country, Globe remains committed to delivering innovative solutions that drive both progress and sustainability,” said  Abigail Cardino, Globe VP for Broadband Business

Preventing Cable Theft

Globe’s modernization from copper to fiber cable is expected to greatly reduce the risk of wire-cutting incidents plaguing copper-based networks.

Copper theft has caused widespread service interruptions and expensive repairs. With fiber, Globe hopes to address the problem while delivering faster, more stable internet to homes and businesses.

Unlike copper, fiber cable — made of glass or plastic — holds no scrap value and cannot be sold to junkshops. Those caught stealing internet cable lines, whether copper or fiber, face imprisonment of up to 5 years and fines of up to Php 100,000 Under Republic Act 10515 or the Anti-Cable Television and Cable Internet Tapping Act of 2013.

“Shifting to fiber enhances connectivity for our customers and protects our infrastructure from copper theft. Fiber’s lack of resale value discourages wire cutting and improves service reliability across these cities,”  said Cardino.

Globe is calling on the public to be vigilant and support its campaign against cable theft. Incidents may be reported to the nearest barangay or police station.

Globe continues to lead the way in modernizing the Philippines’ digital infrastructure. With this completed migration, the company is well-positioned to support the country’s digital needs and future growth.

Globe renews its call for the public to exercise vigilance against SMS spoofing, a sophisticated scam tactic that has seen a resurgence in recent months, with fraudsters using names of reputable organizations to take advantage of customers’ trust.

Spoofing involves fraudsters impersonating legitimate SMS sender IDs, including Globe and other organizations, to trick recipients into believing that the messages are authentic. This technique has become increasingly prevalent, particularly in Metro Manila, despite the implementation of SIM registration last year aimed at curbing SMS fraud.

Customers have reported receiving spoofed messages that mimic Globe’s sender ID, enticing them with fraudulent links or else hooking them with claims of account problems. These deceptive messages aim to steal personal and sensitive information, which can grant scammers access to online accounts such as social media profiles, e-wallets, and bank accounts.

Globe is taking proactive steps to combat spoofing, including issuing public warnings, collaborating with industry partners and law enforcement agencies to apprehend scammers, and investing in advanced security measures to detect and block spoofed messages.

“Spoofing is a form of cybercrime that is becoming increasingly difficult to detect. We urge everyone to be extra cautious with any SMS that asks for personal information or prompts to click on a link. Globe will never send a clickable link in its official customer advisories,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer.

Spoofing is a global concern, facilitated by the use of illegal devices known as International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) catchers or fake cell towers. These devices can intercept mobile communications within a certain radius, allowing fraudsters to send messages with spoofed sender IDs that bypass network spam filters.

Globe urges the public to report any suspicious messages to its customer service channels and to follow these digital security best practices:

  • Never click on links from unknown sources.
  • Never share personal information via SMS.
  • Regularly update your knowledge on the latest scam tactics.
  • Be wary of unsolicited messages that offer deals that seem too good to be true.
  • Turn on spam filters on your phone, if feature is available.

By raising awareness and promoting collective vigilance, Globe aims to protect its customers and the public from these harmful practices.

Anton Bonifacio (4th from left), Globe’s Chief AI and Chief Information Security Officer, speaks at the GSMA’s Mobile 360 in Seoul, South Korea, Oct. 1, 2024.

Globe has joined a select group of leading telecommunications companies from around the world committed to the GSMA’s industry-first Responsible AI (RAI) Maturity Roadmap. This pioneering initiative reinforces Globe’s dedication to ethical and responsible AI development and deployment, ensuring that these powerful technologies are harnessed for the benefit of its customers, the environment and the society as a whole.

As part of its broader sustainability strategy, Globe views responsible AI as a critical component in driving sustainable digital transformation. By adopting the GSMA RAI Maturity Roadmap, Globe ensures that its AI will not only deliver business value but also contribute to sustainable development.

The GSMA, a global organization that unifies mobile operators around the world, developed the RAI Maturity Roadmap to address the growing importance of AI in the telecommunications industry. This marks the first time an entire sector has committed to a common approach to AI.

Globe is among 19 mobile network operators from around the world that have adopted  the roadmap to track, maintain and improve AI use.

The roadmap, based on insights from McKinsey and a group of leading operators, provides a structured framework for telecommunications companies to assess their current AI maturity level and identify areas for improvement. This allows them to align their AI strategies with responsible practices, ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI applications.

The roadmap addresses five core dimensions: a company’s vision, values, and strategic goals; operating model and AI governance; technical controls to ensure compliance with regulations; collaboration with third-party ecosystems; and corporate change management and communication.

Globe recognizes the transformative potential of AI across its operations, from strengthening climate resilience and optimizing network performance to enhancing customer service and preventing fraud. At the same time, Globe has bolstered its online safety measures by actively blocking non-photographic imagery (NPI) of child sexual abuse, including AI-generated content. By adhering to the GSMA RAI Maturity Roadmap, Globe is committed to ensuring that its AI-driven innovations are not only cutting-edge but also deployed ethically and responsibly, prioritizing the safety and well-being of its users.

Speaking at the GSMA’s Mobile 360 series held in Seoul, South Korea, Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief AI Officer, emphasized the need for early action towards responsible AI use.

“We’ve seen in the internet age, it took the world longer to prioritize cybersecurity, data privacy, ethics, and governance. I think we do have a great opportunity in this new technology to do it right much earlier, whether that’s in terms of privacy or security, and just ensuring that the human is still at the center, especially with something this disruptive,” Bonifacio said.

He said the GSMA Roadmap is crucial given the dearth in frameworks and references on best practices when it comes to responsible AI use. Through the GSMA initiative, Globe can also  share its own learnings as it goes through AI adoption.

“Maintaining a balance between rapid innovation and ethical development is crucial. We can’t wait for perfect standards and policies before moving forward, but we also can’t move forward without them. The GSMA roadmap provides the necessary framework to achieve this balance, ensuring we can reach an ethical and responsible ground as we drive AI adoption in Globe,” said Bonifacio.

Globe is advancing AI adoption for both internal and external processes. Earlier this year, Globe named Bonifacio its Chief AI Officer, the first in the Philippines, and established a separate AI Group, demonstrating the company’s commitment to integrating AI in the business.

Currently, Globe is using AI to transform ways of working towards greater productivity and engagement among employees. Generative AI is also being used to “simplify the way we serve customers,” said Bonifacio.

“AI is immensely important to Globe. We do firmly believe it’s beyond the hype and it could be as transformational as the internet was. We see AI as a powerful tool that can help us create happier employees by simplifying tasks, improving work-life balance, and freeing up time for more meaningful work. This, in turn, enhances customer experiences and, ultimately, shareholder value. In Globe, this is what we call the Circle of Happiness. And AI is key to greasing those wheels to keep the circle going,” said Bonifacio.

Globe has enhanced its digital infrastructure in Pangasinan, building four cell sites and upgrading 13 existing ones to support connectivity needs in the province, known for agricultural bounty and a burgeoning tourism industry.

The new sites, built in Bayambang, Binalonan, Mangatarem, and San Manuel, aims to deliver robust mobile and internet connectivity throughout these strategic locations.

Pangasinan, an agricultural powerhouse in Northern Luzon, boasts of vast farmlands and a rich coastal environment, supporting both traditional and innovative agricultural practices. It is known for the best tasting bangus, bocayo, and bagoong.

The new and expanded Globe sites are expected to benefit the local agricultural sector, enabling farmers to access up-to-date information on weather, market prices, and modern farming techniques. These improvements in digital connectivity will help farmers optimize their operations, leading to increased productivity and profitability.

Tourism in Pangasinan, a vital contributor to the local economy, will also receive a substantial boost. Enhanced connectivity will make it easier for tourists to plan their visits, navigate the region’s attractions, and share their experiences in real-time.

The province offers numerous natural and historical attractions such as the Hundred Islands National Park, Bolinao Falls, Cape Bolinao Lighthouse, and the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag which draw many local and foreign visitors every year.

Globe’s expanded network in Pangasinan aligns with the local government’s efforts to digitalize services and promote economic development.

“Our efforts in Pangasinan are designed to support the province’s key industries by providing the digital tools necessary for innovation, growth, and success,” said Joel Agustin, Globe SVP and Head of Service Planning and Engineering.

The company’s investments in the region provide a foundation for more robust economic activities, better public services, and improved access to education and healthcare.

Globe is warning its customers against a new vishing or voice phishing scam where fraudsters pretend to be officials of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

In this new scheme, scammers call potential victims claiming that their phone number has been linked to illegal activities. The fraudsters would then extort money from their targets, threatening to arrest them if they do not cooperate.

“Criminals prey on our natural respect for authority, using it as a weapon to deceive and manipulate. This is what we see in this new scam modus, where fraudsters pretend to be NTC officials. We call on our customers to be very vigilant and do not fall victim to these scammers,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer.

Here are some tips to help you protect yourself from a vishing scam:

  • Be wary of unsolicited calls, especially from numbers you don’t recognize.
  • Do not give out your personal information or financial details over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from a legitimate organization.
  • If you are unsure about the legitimacy of a call, hang up the phone and call the organization directly using a phone number you know is correct.
  • Report suspicious calls to the authorities.

Globe is committed to protecting its customers from scams. The company is working with the NTC and other law enforcement agencies to crack down on scammers and bring them to justice. Globe also proactively blocks numbers linked to various forms of scams, including vishing.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the NTC and asking for your personal information, please do not engage. Hang up the phone and report the call to the NTC via its website, www.ntc.gov.ph, or call its hotline via 1682.

The country’s telcos recently presented a blueprint to Malacañang to reach Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) by expanding network infrastructure with new tower builds between 2025 and 2028.

In a recent meeting of the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC), the body’s Connectivity Plan Task Force (CPTF), headed by Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO, proposed the construction of new towers in remote parts of the country through a public-private collaboration.

This groundbreaking initiative is in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s’ pledge in his last State of the Nation Address to bring connectivity to remote areas.

The proposal aims to bridge the digital divide by delivering essential telecom services to the Philippines’ most underserved communities. Currently, 7,063 barangays are classified as Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), home to nearly 25 million residents.

At the meeting, Cu shared that as of 2024, over 600 Globe cell sites were already operational in GIDAs.

In a major push to expand coverage, the country’s three Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), including Globe, proposed to maximize utilization of existing towers and build new infrastructure in GIDAs. The telcos also proposed to provide SIMs with data plans through government subsidy to unconnected Filipino households between this year and 2028.

The SIMs will include automatic monthly load seeding of 50GB for a year, which can cover the average usage of a five-member household. This ensures that even remote communities can be connected with mobile signals and the internet, enhancing their access to education, healthcare, government services, and economic opportunities.

“The telco industry is fully dedicated to leveraging our partnership within the industry and with the government to reach underserved areas where the private sector has been unable to build because of the negative cost to business,” said Cu.

“Once the government lays a bigger stake in our push for inclusive connectivity and invests in our proposal, this will mark a milestone in our collective aspiration for a Digital Philippines. Together, we will be able to create pathways to opportunities and essential services that can significantly improve lives,” he added.

By maximizing the use of existing sites while strategically building new ones in underserved areas, the project will minimize overlaps among providers and optimize coverage across the country. This allows each barangay in GIDAs to receive telco support from at least one provider, avoiding unnecessary competition and duplication of efforts in a single area.

Beyond the immediate infrastructure rollout, the CPTF is also advocating for critical legislative support to strictly enforce the streamlining of permitting process for new cell sites, ensure consistent energization for telco towers, and rationalize spectrum user fees.

These policy reforms are essential for the efficient deployment of new infrastructure, enabling telcos to serve GIDAs without encountering unnecessary regulatory hurdles.

In its Digital 2024 report released in January this year, Data Reportal said 26.4% or over a quarter of Filipinos “remained offline” at the start of the year, indicating that while robust connectivity has been achieved in the country, still a number of the Philippine population lacked internet access.

Marcos earlier vowed to improve connectivity infrastructure in the country, saying his administration would pave the way for policy reforms and nationwide enforcement of streamlined processes to remove hurdles to connectivity expansion.

Innovation brings connectivity to remote areas

Globe recently held a successful end-to-end satellite SMS customer trial in a remote area with no reception in Zambales, a milestone in the company’s initiative to deliver connectivity in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

In the breakthrough test, Globe transmitted text messages using standard phones via Globe and TM SIMs through partner Lynk Global Inc.’s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites, marking a major breakthrough in providing reliable and inclusive connectivity.

The historic trial marks the first time regular mobile phones on prepaid and postpaid accounts have connected directly to a satellite to send SMS. This is particularly relevant in the Philippines, where many areas remain isolated due to the archipelago’s diverse geographical makeup.

The live demonstration, conducted in a mobile blackspot in Lake Mapanuepe, Zambales, utilized Lynk’s state-of-the-art “cell tower in space” LEO satellites that provide direct-to-standard-phone global connectivity in partnership with Globe.

The test, which used a range of mobile devices, showed that direct-to-phone satellite communication is possible without any modifications to existing devices, allowing for widespread access and affordability.

The innovative achievement highlights Globe’s dedication to expanding coverage, particularly in rural and underserved areas where building traditional cell towers remains a challenge.

“This is a significant step in our mission to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that every Filipino, regardless of location, stays connected to the world,” said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe.

“By leveraging Lynk Global’s low-earth orbit satellite technology, we are breaking barriers and bringing the next wave of solutions to the remotest areas, allowing families, travelers and businesses to stay closer than ever.”

Globe will hold another trial in different scenarios in Mindanao this month, which will solidify its adoption of this innovative technology. The company plans to fully integrate this technology in its network in order to serve more GIDAs. Globe currently has presence in over 500 GIDAs across the country.

Globe has consistently led the way in introducing cutting-edge technologies to the country. This customer trial is only the beginning of the company’s vision to incorporate satellite-based communication into its services, further cementing its role as a leader in technological innovation in the Philippines.

Globe Business remains at the forefront of empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through its Saludo SME roadshow. This initiative celebrates the innovation and resilience of Filipino entrepreneurs as they drive their businesses toward sustainable growth and success.

Comprising 99% of businesses in the Philippines, MSMEs are the backbone of the country’s economy, with 90% classified as micro and 9% as small businesses.

To kick off the tech roadshow for MSMEs, Globe Business recently hosted a hybrid event at Seda Vertis North, Quezon City. This activity brought together industry leaders and thought influencers to provide MSMEs with practical insights and digital solutions tailored to their unique needs.

Bela Gupta D’Souza, founder of edamama, an e-commerce platform for parents, shared her expertise in her talk titled “Leveling the Playing Field: How E-commerce is Empowering Retail Businesses.”

She highlighted how edamama leverages e-commerce trends like mobile commerce, social commerce, omnichannel selling, and personalized shopping to drive growth.  Gupta D’Souza also stressed the importance of infrastructure in e-commerce.

“E-commerce cannot thrive without the support of infrastructure. Even remote parts of the Philippines today can access online shopping, thanks to these improvements,” she said, sharing actionable insights on how MSMEs can use similar strategies to grow their businesses.

On the other hand, Mina Akram from Go Negosyo spoke about the organization’s efforts in assisting entrepreneurs, particularly in their digitalization journey.

During her presentation on “Building a Successful Business from the Ground Up: Insights and Lessons from Go Negosyo,” she explained how Go Negosyo guides, enables, and empowers MSMEs from the conceptualization stage to scaling up.

“Go Negosyo is the only non profit organization in the Philippines that focuses on mentorship, and we advocate for a change in mindset for Filipinos to become more enterprising,” said Akram.

The event also marked the official introduction of Mariel Veluz, founder of Sewn Sandals, as Globe Business’s newest Brand Ambassador for the Supply Chain Industry.

Meanwhile, Andrea Tesorero, Globe Business Brand Strategy Head, emphasized the importance of staying ahead in a rapidly changing market. She underscored the Saludo SME campaign’s commitment to equipping entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive.

“To stay ahead of the competition and future-proof our businesses, we must continuously innovate. We need to balance enhancing customer experiences and streamlining operations while seizing new growth opportunities. At Globe Business, we are committed to keeping our partners informed and equipped with the latest trends and solutions. We want to ensure they remain resilient and successful in today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving market,” she said.

At the event, digital solutions partners such as m360, Prosperna, Samsung, Yahshua Cloud Payroll Solutions, and Zayls showcased their latest innovations designed to help MSMEs improve their operations and boost their competitiveness.

Consultation pods were set up outside the event hall, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with brand representatives. This allowed them to address any questions or concerns about products and services presented during the event.

Meldon Denina, Globe Business Head for NGMA Sales and Account Management, emphasized the vital role of the human element in business success: “It is crucial to remember that technology is merely a tool. Even with digital advancements, success stories, and groundbreaking developments in artificial intelligence, it is the people using them for good and for progress that truly make a difference.”

As the Saludo SME campaign moves forward, Globe Business will continue to bring its roadshows to various regions. The next stop would be Iloilo in an effort to provide even greater support to MSMEs across the country.
