MANILA – Fair weather with isolated rain showers is expected to continue across the Philippines on Thursday (23 May 2024), according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
“Since the low-pressure area (LPA) is still far from the country, fair weather will persist,” said Aldczar Aurelio of PAGASA.
The cloud cluster that developed into an LPA on Wednesday was last tracked 1,080 km east of southeastern Mindanao, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
Aurelio mentioned that the LPA is likely to enter PAR on Thursday and head towards Eastern Visayas and the eastern section of Luzon. “It could develop into a tropical cyclone and will be named Aghon,” he added.
Meanwhile, 43 areas are forecast to experience dangerous heat indices.
PAGASA expects the heat index, which combines air temperature and relative humidity to reflect how hot it feels, to peak at 47°C in Guiuan, Eastern Samar.
A heat index of 46°C is likely in Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Aparri, Cagayan; and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.

No weather disturbances are expected to affect the country, she added.
Isolated rain showers are likely in the afternoon or evening. The easterlies will cause thunderstorms, which could lead to severe thunderstorms and potentially result in flash floods or landslides, according to PAGASA.
Meanwhile, PAGASA forecasted the heat index, which indicates how hot it feels when relative humidity is combined with air temperature, to peak at 50 degrees Celsius in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, where a 51°C index was reported on Monday.
A 47°C heat index could be experienced in Roxas City, Capiz, and 46°C in Sangley Point, Cavite.

Despite the forecast of isolated rain showers, PAGASA warned of soaring heat index readings in 32 areas across the country, ranging from 42°C to 46°C.
Classified as having “dangerous” temperatures are areas including NAIA in Pasay City, Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, and Iloilo City, among others.
Laoag, Ilocos Norte, is expected to record the highest heat index at 46°C.
The heat index, or apparent temperature, factors in humidity and air temperature to indicate how hot the body feels.
PAGASA cautioned that prolonged exposure and activity under the sun could lead to fatigue, heat cramps, and heat stroke.
