MANILA — Tropical Depression Querubin weakened into a low-pressure area (LPA) on Wednesday afternoon, but the threat of heavy to intense rainfall remains for parts of the Visayas and Mindanao, as indicated by the latest advisory from the government weather bureau for Thursday (19 Nov 2024).
According to weather specialist Daniel James Villamil, although the system has weakened, it will continue to bring significant rainfall across the eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao.
The trough or extension of the LPA will also result in cloudy skies and scattered rain showers, as well as thunderstorms, throughout the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao.
In a weather update issued at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned that heavy to intense rainfall would be experienced on Thursday (19 Dec 2024) in the provinces of Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte.
This volume of rainfall could trigger floods and landslides, particularly in areas with moderate to high susceptibility to such hazards.
As of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the LPA was located approximately 275 kilometers east of Surigao City in Surigao del Norte.
Thursday through Sunday
Pagasa noted that from Thursday through Sunday, the LPA is expected to traverse across Mindanao, heading toward the Sulu Sea and eventually reaching Palawan.
Residents in affected regions are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for possible disruptions caused by the continuing rainfall and the risk of flooding and landslides.
