The United States has reversed the withdrawal initiated by Donald Trump and officially rejoined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).

Despite opposition from Russia and China, the decision was made in an extraordinary session of the UN General Assembly, with 132 members voting in favor, 10 against, and 15 abstaining.

Former President Trump had announced the US withdrawal from Unesco six years ago, citing perceived bias against Israel. The decision took effect in 2018. However, the current administration has recognized the importance of rejoining this significant multilateral organization.

Denise Bauer, the US Ambassador to France, expressed gratitude for the leadership shown by key members and emphasized the significance of being part of Unesco once again. Iran, Syria, China, North Korea, and Russia were among the dissenting voices, attempting to delay the vote through procedural statements and amendments. (Source: Onine/ai/mnm)
