MANILA — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has on Tuesday (18 Feb 2025) launched Southeast Asia’s first-ever drone-assisted medicine delivery in Barangay Niogan, Pililla, Rizal.
This groundbreaking initiative was introduced on January 31, in collaboration with mWell and Philippine Flying Labs.
The project is part of the SMART Villages and SMART Islands (SVSI) framework, which seeks to address challenges like geographic barriers, limited transportation, and logistical issues in accessing medical care.
DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy emphasized the importance of this technology for Filipinos living in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs), where timely access to healthcare is often delayed.
“This pilot program will help refine digital healthcare services, ensuring that GIDAs benefit from innovative e-health solutions,” Uy said. He highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding access to essential healthcare through technology, noting that public-private partnerships play a vital role in its success.
Barangay Niogan Chairperson Placido Quitiong expressed optimism about the program, emphasizing its potential to deliver immediate medical aid to the elderly, disabled, and those with serious health conditions in remote areas. “This will ensure our community members get the help they need on time,” he said.
The DICT’s initiative marks a step toward making healthcare more accessible, efficient, and inclusive across the Philippines.
