MANILA — In a long-overdue recognition, Philippine basketball legends Nelson Asaytono, Arnie Tuadles, and Abe King have finally secured their places among the PBA’s all-time greatest players.

The three stalwarts lead the latest group of 10 new additions to the prestigious list, formally announced on Wednesday night.

Nicknamed “The Bull,” the 58-year-old Asaytono earns this honor after being previously left out of both the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players list and the subsequent 15 additions made for the 40th anniversary a decade ago. However, with the league approaching its 50th anniversary on April 9, the timing is fitting for Asaytono’s long-awaited induction.

Hailing from Oriental Mindoro, Asaytono enjoyed a stellar 17-season career in the PBA, securing seven championships, two Best Player of the Conference awards, and earning a spot on the Mythical First Team three times, among other accolades.

Tuadles and King, meanwhile, made their mark in the league after debuting in 1979 and 1977, respectively. Both started their professional careers with the legendary Toyota franchise and went on to win multiple championships, solidifying their places in PBA history.

“The selection process was meticulous, and the PBA extends its gratitude to the members of the Selection Committee for their dedication and effort,” PBA Commissioner Willy Marcial said in Filipino. “The deliberations were tough because many former players are deserving, but for those ultimately chosen, congratulations. We salute your contributions to the league.”

The Selection Committee was chaired by former PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios and included PBA legends Ramon Fernandez, Atoy Co, Allan Caidic, and Dante Silverio. Veteran sports journalists Quinito Henson, Andy Jao, Al Mendoza, Ding Marcelo, and Nelson Beltran also participated in the selection process.

Joining Asaytono, Tuadles, and King in the newly expanded list are Jeff Cariaso, Bong Hawkins, June Mar Fajardo, Danny Seigle, Scottie Thompson, Manny Victorino, and Elpidio “Yoyoy” Villamin. Notably, San Miguel Beer’s Fajardo and Barangay Ginebra’s Thompson are the only active players among the new inductees.

The 10 honorees will be formally recognized in a special gala evening on April 11 at Solaire Resort North, a key highlight of the PBA’s 50th season celebration.
